Nephrotic Syndrome

Acute renal failure

The exact aetiology of severe oliguria, often resistant to diuretics, is not fully understood. Renal biospies usually show marked interstitial oedema and acute tubular necrosis.

Causes:

  • Hypovolaemia
  • Tubulointerstitial oedema and tubular protein casts
  • Bilateral renal vein thrombosis
  • Nephrotoxic antibiotics
  • Tubulointerstitial nephritis associated with furosemide use
  • Allergic interstitial nephritis from antibiotics or other agents
