Potassium supplements - intravenous or oral

Drugs that move potassium from the ICF to the ECF

  • β-blockers, α-adrenergic agonists
  • Drugs that depolarize cell membranes
  • Drugs causing cell necrosis eg in chemotherapy


Drugs that reduce potassium excretion

  • Drugs which cause renal damage
  • Drugs that cause interstitial nephritis
  • Drugs that reduce the activity of aldosterone eg ACE inhibitors, potassium-sparing diuretics.
