Metabolic acidosis

Metabolic acidosis occurs because of

1. an addition of acid to the body, or

2. loss of bicarbonate from the body.

The first will be accompanied by an extra anion and be identified by a rise in the anion gap.

• Increased anion gap acidosis

• Normal anion gap acidosis
