Metabolic alkalosis

Correct.

In response to a metabolic alkalosis, the lungs would try and retain CO₂ in order to reduce the alkalaemia.  A normal adaptive response is therefore a rise in pCO₂.  However, this compensation is limited by the need to maintain adequate ventilation to avoid hypoxia.
